What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are metal posts (shaped similar to a screw) that are surgically implanted directly into the jawbone, serving as artificial tooth root providing a long-tern base for secure, stable and comfortable tooth replacement. Implants integrate with the bone of the jaw forming a strong, durable, long term anchor for new teeth as well as keep the bone itself from deteriorating. Because it integrates with your jawbone, dental implants are the only dental restoration option that preserves natural bone and helps stimulate bone growth. It also ensures there is no slippage or other uncomfortable movement that can sometimes happen with dentures.

Types of Dental Implants:

Endosteal (in the bone): The most commonly used type of implant. These are surgically implanted into the jawbone. The implant and bone bond together after two to six months to form an anchor for an artificial tooth.
Subperiosteal (on the bone): This type is more for patients who are unable to wear dentures and who have minimum bone height. Subperiosteal implants consist of a metal frame that is fitted on top of the jawbone just below the gum tissue. As the gums heal, the frame becomes fixed to the bone.

3 parts to a dental implant:

A. Implant Screw: A screw is implanted into your jawbone serving as a root for your new tooth. This screw is permanently attaching to your jaw creating a long-term solution.

B. Abutment: A connecter, also known as an abutment, is placed on top of the implant to support and hold your crown.

C. Crown: Finally, the crown is added. The crown is a prosthetic tooth that are custom made to match your natural teeth and fit in your mouth.
